medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

>Beatrix of Aa (of Nazareth) .... entered the Cistercian order in 1216 at the
age of 16. From 1237 on she was prioress of the nunnery Nazareth
near Lier (Belgium).

Aa *must* be a fake name, just to get top billing in the Yellow Pages.

be that as it may, i'm wondering how common are these places (abbeys) which
take the name of a site in the holy land.... the early 12th c. Benedictine
foundation of "St. Mary of Josaphat [sic]" was at Lèves, in the valley of the
Eure, just a mile or two downstream from Chartres,
i.e., (very) roughly topographically analogous to the position of the abbey of
"St. Mary of Jehosaphat" in the valley of the same name below Jerusalem (said
to be the site of Her tomb, i believe).

(later local tradition had it that the founder, newly-installed Bishop Godfrey
of Lèves --on whose ancestral lands the house was built-- founded the place as
fulfilment of a deal with the Pope by which he would be relieved of his vow to
make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, freeing him to
take up the sea of Chartres instead. according to this version of
things, he was already well on his way over-the-sees and in Rome when
word reached him of Bishop Ivo's death and his own election. the story's a
bit too pat, for my money, but.... i guess stranger things happened, in ces
temps là.)

does the list happen to know of any other such places, off the top of
its collective head?

best to all from the idly curious,

christopher

p.s. Many thanks for the response to the last Idle Question re the
Minions of Mani --i'm still working on that one.
