medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (24. August) is the feast day of:

Bartholomew (1st cent.) One of the twelve apostles, his proper name was
apparently Natanael bar Tolmai. According to tradition, after the
resurrection Bartholomew traveled and preached in Armenia, India, and
Mesopotamia. Legend reports that he could heal the sick and cast out
demons. Also according to legend, he was martyred by being flayed.
Frankfurt cathedral has claimed to have his skin since 1238.

Irchard (5th cent.?) The Scot Irchard was a missionary in his native land,
according to one tradition as a companion of Ternan, who lived in the fifth
century. Other sources report that he was consecrated bishop by Gregory
the Great (an extremely common topos in Irish vitae; is the same true in
Scotland?).

Audoin (Ouen) Audoin was born in c. 605 near Soissons. In 635 he founded
the monastery of Rebais, followed in 648 by Fontanelle. In 641 Audoin was
consecrated as bishop of Rouen, continuing to lead a monastic life as
bishop.

Sandratus (d. 986) A German monk, at first at the Gorzian-reformed house
of St. Maximin in Trier. In 972 Emperor Otto I send him to reform St.
Gallen. From 974 on he was the first abbot of the newly founded Gladbach
(Mönchengladbach), and also led several other monasteries.
