medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (10. August) is the feast day of: Laurence of Rome (d. 258) Laurence has been venerated from an early time in both East and West. According to tradition, the Spaniard Laurence became a deacon under Pope Sixtus II, who was also his friend. Sixtus was arrested on 6. August 258, along with his four deacons (including Laurence). Four days later, Laurence is supposed to have been martyred by roasting him on a grill (it's more likely he was beheaded). Plectrudis (d. 725) Plectrudis was the wife of Pepin the Middle. With her husband she ws a generous benefactor of churchs and monasteries. She is supposed to have had a good influence on Pepin. After Pepin's death, his illegitimate son Charles Martel drove Plectrudis from her residence in Cologne; she probably ended her life in the nunner of St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne, which she had founded. Erluin (d. 987) Erluin was the first abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Gembloux. An ardent reformer, he was blinded by a recalcitrant monk when he attempted to reform the monastery of Lobbes. Eric of Plovpenning (d. 1250) Never formally canonized, this king of Denmark was honored as a saint by the people. Eric became king in 1241. He was deeply religious and loyal to the papacy. To raise money for a crusade, he demanded a penny (penning) from everyone who owned a plow (plov)---thus his nickname. Eric's reign was overshadowed by a standing fight with his two brothers; one of them arranged for Eric's murder, leading to his veneration as a martyr. Dr. Phyllis G.
