                         CALL FOR PAPERS

The 18th Annual Pacific Rim Conference on Disabilities, March 4 &
5, 2002, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, Honolulu, Hawaii

Join us in beautiful, sunny Hawai`i in March! Pac Rim 2002
invites you to submit proposals for presentations and posters for
this distinguished event. Pac Rim 2002 brings together
researchers, professionals, persons with disabilities, family
members, and students in a variety of disciplines that include
health, education, social services and others. Presenters who
represent consumer, family, research, and policy perspectives in
a variety of disciplines including health, medicine, social
science and the disability field are encouraged to participate.
Since the first Pacific Rim conference in 1985, the scope
and size of this premier event has grown to include participants
from the U.S. mainland, Alaska, Pacific Island Nations, Japan,
Australia, the Philippines and numerous other countries. Persons
with disabilities, family members, researchers and service
providers join with policy-makers and nationally recognized
speakers in the field of disabilities, to learn from each other
and to share resources and ideas for communities to fully accept
and support persons with disabilities.
The theme of PacRim 2002 is "Raising Expectations:
Celebrating Disability and Diversity." This theme incorporates
the hopes and dreams of the disability community and reflects on
the diversity of spirit, heritage and culture we feel here in the
pacific.

                      Presentation Formats

PacRim 2002 offers three formats of presentation. The
program committee reserves the right to switch format type to
develop the best possible program.
Breakout: Seventy-five minute traditional presentations are
designed to address specific strand topics. Presenters have the
option of using overhead projection and other visual materials.
Roundtable: Twenty minute topical sessions with multiple
presentations and discussion groups in a room grouped according
to strand. Presenters remain at a table while participants have
the opportunity to participate in several topical groups during
each session. There is no opportunity for visual projection at
these sessions.
Poster: Ninety minute session will highlight current
information about research outcomes as well as innovative
practices and projects. This more relaxed setting offers
opportunities to exchange information, identify opportunities for
collaboration, and renew friendships.

                       Conference Strands

Pac Rim 2002 conference strands have a special focus on
topics of importance and current trends to the Pacific Rim area.
Strands reflect changing perspectives on disabilities from
building communities to valuing diversity and support for all
persons. This year we are encouraging proposals in the following
areas.
Self Determination - including self-advocacy and empowerment
strategies supporting persons with disabilities to life a full
and satisfying life.
Innovative Treatment Options - This strand looks at
innovative or little known interventions for persons with
disabilities in the areas of therapy provision, equipment,
assistive technology, nutrition, behavior, education, or other
areas including community based and home care options. Presenters
will describe the intervention and explain the evidence base
demonstrating its effectiveness.
Secondary Transition & Postsecondary Education including
persons and programs supporting youth with disabilities to
experience success in secondary schools, as they transition to
postsecondary education, to lifelong learning, and to other
employment and community living situations.
Supporting All Students to Succeed - Issues related to the
implementation of a comprehensive system of student supports for
all students. Focus may include personalizing classrooms to meet
the needs of all students; supporting smooth transitions (school
to school, class to class, school to work, etc.); home
involvement in learning; assistance to students and families; and
community outreach and resource coordination. Presentations on
research-based practices in assessment and instruction in the
classroom, school, and community that support all students to
learn are encouraged. Topics related to standards-based reform
and IEP development are welcomed.
Mental Health - This strand will look at evidence based
research on the effectiveness of mental health interventions,
identifying social-emotional and behavioral problems, outcomes
for Hawai`i of the Felix Consent Decree, and the relationship of
mental health to school discipline and suspensions.
Care Coordination - Beginning the journey care coordination
under Part C, continuing the journey care coordination under Part
B, Interrupted journeys coordinated service planning, concluding
journeys making self-determination a reality.
Early Intervention - Topics in this area could look at
infants and toddlers at risk for disabilities, abuse and neglect,
improving child-find, long-term outcomes results from early
intervention, financing, services in natural environments,
effective transitions, etc.

Papers on topics not listed will also be considered. To
