Good point Diana, Several major anti-virus software sites offer online scanning and other services. None I am aware of comes free. For a monthly subscription, they will provide access to software which checks the health of your system and provides upgrades both for your anti-virus software and for your major programs. Once you are registered, the software does most of its work automatically, often without apparently interrupting your connection to other sites. The major players are much of a muchness. Each has slight advantages and disadvantages compared to its competitors. All provide a good basic service. McAfee is excellent, as is Norton from my experience, but there are others just as good by report in the various computer magazines. In addition to providing downloads of new virus databases, members of these services get specific software to combat new viruses, usually within a day or so of the new virus coming out. Upgrades are provided to the anti-virus software from time to time and you would be advised of upgrades becoming available for your operating system etc. The only caution is that the different systems do not appear to like each other. If you are going to use one, stick to it and have no other anti-virus programs on your machine. They can conflict quite badly.
