Dear Ann,

There is a version of the DCW on-line, which is free for academic use. This is useful at scales of 1:1,000,000 or smaller. Try http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/. This is explicitly available free of charge for academic purposes.

Regarding theses, I would guess that the copyright resides with either the author of the thesis or the University to which it was submitted. It would be courteous to have the permission of the former, and perhaps advisable to have permission from the latter!

Otherwise, all published maps (as you are well aware) are subject to copyright and may not be digitized without permission.

All the best

Paul

A colleague is having trouble sending to lis-maps as she has not used
it since the change and it does not want to know her.
Can anyone help with this and send reply to Sheena Carter direct in
Bristol at address below.

Dear All,

As I am a geography librarian, with little to do with maps, I am not
sure how to answer a query from a postgrad, and wonder if anyone could
advise. She says:

"I am completing a thesis on the fisheries of Namibia
and Kerala and would like to include in my disseration recent maps of
the two states, size A4 or just under, and would be grateful if you
could let me know the best way to proceed. I am worried about
copyrights if I copy them from an Atlas, can the be downloaded from
the web?"

Now, I know that if she were to photocopy a whole map from an atlas,
to use in a book which was to be published it would be illegal. But
what is the position with an unpublished thesis - the same?

As to the Web, I assume it would depend on the individual map. Does
anyone know any good site which would give her what she wants?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Sheena Carter
