medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (27. June) is the feast day of:

Apollinare of Ravenna (1st century)  The first bishop of Ravenna.
According to legend, he came from the East as a companion of St. Peter, and
was invited by Peter to convert the non-Christians of the Emilia and
Romagna.

Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444)  Cyril, a native Alexandrian, became patriarch
of Alexandria in 412, succeeding his uncle Theophilus.  He was a major
religious author, who also took part in the Council of Ephesus (431), at
which he argued against Arianism and Nestorianism.

Ariald (d. 1066)  A deacon of Milan, Ariald was one of the founders of the
Pataria---sponsoring at times violent clerical reform.  He was murderedon
27. June near Lago Maggiore.  His cult was approved in 1904.

Ladislaus I of Hungary (d. 1095)  Ladislaus won the Hungarian throne in the
disorders that followed King Stephen's death.  He protected and
strengthened Christianity, and founded several new bishoprics.  According
to legend, while on a campaign Ladislaus and his troops ran out of
water---Ladislaus prayed, and a spring appeared under his horse's hoof.
After his death, Ladislaus' grave at Neutra became a pilgrimage site, and
he was canonized in 1192.  He is said to have appeared in the sky riding a
horse to drive the Mongols from Hungary.

Benvenuto of Gubbio (d. 1232) Benvenuto was a knight, who joined the
Franciscan order in 1222 and entrusted with the care of lepers by Francis.
Noted for his humility and patience, Benvenuto died in 1232.  He was
beatified in 1697.
