ACADEMIC PUBLIC HEALTH TRAINING

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY & PUBLIC HEALTH
SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES
AND
PUBLIC HEALTH TRAINING PROGRAMME (NORTHERN AND YORKSHIRE)

LECTURER (HONORARY)/SPECIALIST REGISTRARS IN PUBLIC HEALTH MEDICINE
(UP TO 3 POSTS)

The University Department seeks medical graduates committed to
public health research and teaching for appointment to up to three
Lecturer (Honorary) / Specialist Registrars in Public Health
Medicine. The appointees will be based in the Department of
Epidemiology and Public Health:

. Help administer and deliver undergraduate teaching in Public
Health Sciences or postgraduate teaching on the MSc in Health
Sciences.

. Contribute to the Department's research activity in one of its
established programmes.

. Participate in the Northern & Yorkshire
regional training scheme in public health medicine.

The Department has lively programmes of research in epidemiology
(particularly stroke, coronary heart disease and environmental
epidemiology) and health promotion (focusing primarily on approaches
to the development and evaluation of interventions to reduce
cardiovascular disease).

We see two potential routes into an academic career through the
Regional Training Programme. In the first, successful candidates
will have Part I MFPHM and be working towards Part II and CCST in
public health. They will be substantially based in the academic
department from appointment. In the second, successful candidates
will be entry level SpR appointments to the regional training
programme. They will initially start with a service attachment,
which will prepare them for Part I. During this time they will be
attached to a district, but will have additional teaching
commitments in the academic department, dependent upon previous
experience. After Part I, and completion of necessary service
attachment, their base will transfer to the academic department.
