Call for papers for the Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting
2002, Los Angeles, March 19-23.

Session on:
“Cultural Industries and the Production of Culture”.

Convenors: Dominic Power and Allen Scott

In recent years there has been a growing awareness among social scientists
and culture theorists of the significance of the economic and commercial
underpinnings of cultural production in contemporary society. The rising
power of the media and entertainment industries combined with the trend to
‘aesthesization’ of many different kinds of manufactured products suggests
that geographers must systematically engage not only with the question of
cultural products as items of consumption, but equally and just as
importantly with the conditions of their production.

This session aims to gather together researchers on the production of
culture and the cultural industries - including but not necessarily
restricted to media, fashion, film, new media, art, design, music, and
architecture – in order to address the many burning questions that are being
raised as this emerging field of enquiry is opened up to further
exploration. Papers are sought that explore:
* the nature and functioning of the cultural industries
* cultural production’s role in regional and urban development
* the spatial economy of culture
* case studies at a sectoral, urban, regional, or national level
* agglomeration/cluster approaches to cultural production
* issues of innovation and creativity in the cultural economy
* cultural politics as it relates to the commodification of culture
* the functioning of labor markets in the culture industries
*       and so on…

You are welcome to contact one of the organizers prior to the submission of
an abstract.
Please submit an abstract of not more than 250 words by August 1st 2001 to
