APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING AHRB Project: 'The Two Unifications of Germany: A Comparative Analysis' Conference at The University of Birmingham, 19-21 September 2002 The Departments of German Studies and Modern History, and the Institute for German Studies are hosting a conference on 19-21 September 2002 at the University of Birmingham. The conference will present the results of the comparative research project on the German unifications of 1870/71 and 1989/90 which has been in progress in the three departments since April 2000. The focus of the project is upon how various individuals and groups (above all, writers, journalists and politicians) anticipated unification and how they subsequently responded to the actual form taken by unification. The members of the project are Prof. Michael Butler, Prof. Ron Speirs, Prof. John Breuilly, Prof. Charlie Jeffery, Dr Corey Ross, Dr Jonathan Grix, Dr Simon Green, Dr Elystan Griffiths, Dr Karoline von Oppen. The conference will feature presentations by research team members together with contributions from a number of scholars invited from Germany, the UK, Canada and the United States. Further details of the project can be obtained from our website http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/unifications or by contacting me or the project leader, Professor Michael Butler. A preliminary programme for the conference will be added to the webside in the coming months. Best wishes, Karoline von Oppen
