I myself have done some work on this, though with reference to
LATE-medieval circumstances.

Langland' in
 Essays on Ricardian literature in honour of J.A. Burrow; ed. by A.J.
Minnis, Charlotte C. Morse and Thorlac Turville-Petre (Oxford, Clarendon
P., 1997). This includes a discussion of the 'good pagan' Trajan.
