This is the first conference on this subject in Greece and is aiming to become a bi-annual event that draws national and international researchers and practitioners active in the area of Human-Computer Interaction. Conference Themes ------------------------ PC-HCI 2001 will cover all main aspects of Human-Computer Interaction research and technology. Submissions on all areas of HCI are invited. Main emphasis is given but is not limited to the following areas: - Intelligent user interfaces - Natural language interaction - Speech interaction - Graphical interaction - Innovative interaction techniques and components - Expert systems for user interaction - User models and models of users - Empirical studies of user behavior - User interface prototyping and management - Interface design and evaluation methodologies - Usability technology - Intelligent tutoring and coaching systems interaction design - Computer Supported Collaboration - Innovative designs and applications of interactive systems with critical value - Virtual reality - Support for mobile users - User interfaces in new application areas (like e-commerce, teleworking and distance learning ) - Usability for senior users and universal usability Language of the conference ---------------------------------- English will be the official language of the conference. Since the conference will be a forum for information exchange between national and international scientists, a large international participation is expected. The Greek language may be used only in tutorials and workshops. Important dates ------------------- Deadline for submission of proposals for tutorials, workshops and full papers: 30 May 2001 Notification on papers, tutorials, workshops acceptance: 30 June 2001 Deadline for camera-ready version of submitted papers: 20 July 2001 Submissions --------------- Submissions should report original work and must not have been published previously. All submissions will be reviewed by an international panel of HCI experts. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two members of the panel. All accepted papers (maximum of 6 single-spaced pages) will be published in the conference proceedings in paper and electronic form. The Proceedings will be published as an edited volume by an international publisher under the title : Human-Computer Interaction research and Practice. Doctoral Consortium ------------------------- PC-HCI 2001 is also intended to be a forum in which PhD students can present= and discuss their work in progress with a panel of experts. Submissions should be in the form of two A4 pages summarizing the student's research program and reporting the work to date. Proposals should be accompanied by a= covering letter from the supervisor of the research confirming registration and the start date of the research. Accepted submissions will be published in PC-HCI 2001Conference Proceedings. Students accepted to the PC-HCI 2001 conference will be given free registration to the Conference. Workshops and Tutorials ------------------------------- Workshops and Tutorials provide an opportunity for small groups to meet and engage in rich and interactive discussions about topics of common interest with the experts in the field. We invite submissions addressing any topic interesting to the HCI community: basic research, applied research, new methodologies, emerging application areas, tools, models and design innovations. A workshop or tutorial is suggested to be 4 hours in duration. We encourage electronic submissions (no more than two pages in PDF format) that should describe goals of the Workshop/Tutorial, clear and detailed description of the topics that should be discussed, justification of their importance and indication of the background of potential participants. Workshop/Tutorial Submissions should also include details of the organizer ( name, address, telephone number, fax number, e-mail address, institutional= affiliation and a brief CV ). The organizers of accepted Workshops and Tutorials will be granted free registration for the Conference. Demos - Videos - Industry --------------------------------- The conference will also focus on HCI-related industry. The goals of industry presentations are to give industrial and commercial organizations the opportunity to present their work in HCI and usability (practices, methods, tools, results from evaluation, etc.), and to give all participants= the chance to learn more about HCI practice and discuss different approaches. Submissions of videotapes (PAL format) are also invited, showing= novel user interface designs or systems that demonstrate innovative interaction features or techniques. Patras, the capital city of= Western Greece, is located in the NW Peloponnese; it has a population of a quarter of a million and is linked with all the major cities of Greece and Europe via land, sea and air. It is an interesting and attractive city where the archaeological sites are blended harmoniously with the contemporary and lively rhythms. The city's history goes back to prehistoric times and the Mycenean civilisation. The city was created with the union of three agricultural districts (Aroe, Anthia and Messatis) and was named after Patreas, leader of the Achaians who= settled in the area during the 12th century BC. In the 3rd century BC the Achaians formed the famous Achaian Confederation, which brought the city to prominence. During the Roman times the city flourished, since it won the favour of many Roman emperors and became a cosmopolitan centre. In the 1st century AD Saint Andrew lived, taught and martyred in the city and since then he is considered as its Patron Saint. During the 19th and 20th century, Patras became an important commercial and industrial centre and the main exporting node of Greece to Western Europe.
