medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

As I recall the legend, the donkey was kept without food for a number of
days and then brought into church. In the church was a pile of straw and
the eucharist. The hungry donkey knelt before the eucharist rather than eat
the straw. The donkey did not receive the eucharist, but simply
acknowledged it. Anthony's point was that even beasts could recognize the
eucharist.
