Develop the key skills you need to make successful purchasing decisions and
deal confidently with suppliers in:

Purchasing skills: an introduction
A new Library Association workshop on 21 May, in London

Efficient and effective procurement is a fundamental element of gaining
value for money, whether formally required by Best Value or not. Many
librarians are part-time buyers. They are expected to make buying decisions
as well as deal with suppliers and their sales representatives. Most
supplier representatives have received extensive training on customer
relations but few librarians have received any formal training. This
workshop is specifically designed to equip the librarian who is a part-time
or novice buyer with an overview of the basic purchasing skills.

Benefits from attending
This one-day workshop will examine the purchasing cycle and explore the
contribution that participants can make to improve purchasing value for
money in their job. By the end of the day participants will understand the
various stages of the purchasing cycle and will be more confident in dealing
with suppliers.

By the end of the event participants will have:
* an overview of the purchasing cycle
*       basic skills in negotiation
* the confidence to deal effectively with sales representatives

Who will benefit from attending?
Those involved in specifying purchasing requirements, selecting suppliers,
