Social, ethical and legal issues raised by pharmacogenetics

Applications are invited for the above post to work in the
Genetics and Society Programme of the Institute for the
Study of Biorisks and Society (IBiS).  IBiS carries out
specialist research on the social, legal, ethical, cultural
and economic impacts of development in biosciences,
including genetics, and biotechnology.

The successful candidate will be the main researcher on a
project looking at the social, ethical and regulatory issues
raised by drug development and prescribing based on genetic
information (pharmacogenetics).  Duties will include
researching the background to pharmacogenetics, carrying out
a survey of firms working in this area, undertaking a series
of case studies of how genetic testing might be used with
particular drugs, analysing the ethical, social and legal
issues which arise, and contributing to written reports and
publications.

Candidates should have a PhD in social sciences or similar
and some experience of qualitative research.  The ability to
work independently and take initiative is highly desirable. 
This post will involve some travelling in the UK and Europe.

Salary will be £17,775 per annum.  This post is available
from 1 May 2001 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract
for a period of two years.
