medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Christopher,

Amiens cathedral ("AMI") claimed the relic of St. John the Baptist's head. In
actuality it was a skull missing its jawbone and the back of its cranium. In
Latin documents from Amiens, the relic was often referred to as the Baptist's
"facies" rather than his "caput." In terms of the Latin on the pilgrim
badges, I think that "hic" means "this" and "signum" means image or
representation. Many of the badges did show his face or head (some show a
ritual procession with the relic, as held by a priest and acolytes).

I hope this helps.

Best,

Victoria Reed
