Dear All,

It is a while since I posted to this list, but I am now employed on a
Wellcome Trust project here in England exploring the oral histories of
patients and therapists who have undertaken treatments to change sexual
orientation.

While the states has had extensive documentation and debate on this subject
- especially with the ex-gay ministries - in Britain we have little
experiential evidence of the experience and extent of medical and
psychological 'reparative' treatments. We do know several hospitals in
London, Manchester, Leicester, Bridgend, Liverpool, Birmingham and Newcastle
conducted such treatments.

Me, Prof. Jeffrey Weeks, Prof. Michael King and Dr Annie Bartlett are
currently making contact with people who underwent treatments in Britain -
both men and women - since the 1950s to the present day. We are also
interested in talking to relatives of those people. As someone who has
worked in the field of disability and sexuality I am aware that many
disabled people often come into constant contact with the NHS and
psychological services, and that sexuality is either ignored or seen as
problematic. It is therefore very probable that 'out there', some gay
disabled people may have come across offers of such treatments. If people
have any information to offer this study it would be very welcome. Further
information can be requested in confidence from :
