The following comments by Paul Chek on the Weights-2 list raised a topic which is very commonly misunderstood by many working in the alternative health professions and warrants some further comment: <The principles of holistic health are about achieving and maintaining homeostasis in the body. I believe that the point of homeostasis is the optimal place for physiological systems to function from. Anything else is compensation, which eventually leads to decompensation, which commonly presents itself as injury and ill health....> ***Plenty of research and clinical findings have been showing that a perfect state of precise homeostasis is a myth achieved nowhere in the universe, and when physiological systems approach anything close to that level of 'harmony', the likelihood of breakdown, such as sudden heart attacks, increases markedly. Many books and scientific journals (such as 'Scientific American', 'Natur'e and 'Science') comment on the role of 'chaos', fuzzy logic, non-linear processes, non-equilibrium systems and so on in the maintenance, growth and failure of biological systems, as well as in mental stability. The renowned Belgian scientist, Dr Ilya Prigogine, ("Order Out Of Chaos") won a Nobel Prize for work in this fascinating field of endeavour. A so-called "point of homeostasis", according to information theory and thermodynamics is a 'point' of little or no information, which is associated with drastically impaired or non-existent feedback and control. In other words, it is hardly a desirable state to encourage in living systems. All life is about correction, adaptation and compensation. These ideas on homeostasis are dinosaurs from outdated science of the past and need to be revised. Dr Mel C Siff Denver, USA http://www.egroups.com/group/supertraining
