Many thanks for the reply. However, I think I should word my question differently.

Since I am not familiar with the English use of the word in this way it was really to find out whether the expression is used in the same way in the two languages. If it isn't then I am curious to know how the Italian use of it started. Since Italian has adopted words such as 'camping', 'dancing' and 'footing' and uses them in ways which differ markedly from English usage I was interested in this apparently new addition.

I wonder whether anyone could explain the origin of the Italian use of the English word 'mobbing' to mean 'picking on someone'. Isn't the word 'vessazione' good enough?
