Postgraduate Research in

HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada

The Department of Psychology at Carleton University is inviting applications for
postgraduate study from highly qualified and motivated candidates. We are the
only Psychology Department in Canada with five full-time faculty involved in HCI
and a Chair in User-Centred Design that is fully funded by the Hi-Tech industry.
Our graduates are in very high demand, so we are expanding the training program
dramatically to meet the increasing need for HCI skills. Our research program is
very active and covers a broad range of topics including User Interface Design
and Evaluation, Design Processes, Distributed/Collaborative Decision Making,
CSCW, Cognitive and Social Modeling, User Experience/Affective Computing,
Technology in Education, and Technological Policy Development. We have

Competitive funding for postgraduate scholarships from NSERC (Natural Sciences
and Engineering Research Council of Canada) and other sources. These are open to
local and foreign applicants.

To maximize chances for financial support, prospective applicants who wish to be
considered for commencement in September 2001 are encouraged to forward their
application to Professor Gitte Lindgaard ([log in to unmask] ) by
February 1. Applications arriving after that date will be reviewed in June 2001.
For commencement in January 2002, applications should be lodged by November 1,
2001.

The Computer-User Research and Evaluation (CURE)

The CURE program has offered undergraduate and graduate training in HCI for over
two decades. It was the first HCI program based in a Psychology department in
Canada, and one of the first, if not the first, in North America.

The CURE program was designed to have close contact with local firms and the
federal government. Locally, graduates from the CURE program are now working for
Nortel, Corel, Cognos, Newbridge, Mitel, Alcatel, Itemus Solutions, the federal
government, and others. Further afield, our graduates are working for Charles
Schwab, AT&T, ISM BC, SAS Institute, Microsoft, and others. For more information
read our web pages at
