Research Fellow

Distributed Adaptive Control for Traffic Signal Systems

The purpose of this two-year EPSRC-funded project is to develop and test a
novel approach to traffic responsive signal control using recent
technologies of machine learning. The approach that will be pursued is to
use evolutionary computing and reinforcement learning with performance fed
back from a microscopic traffic simulation. This project is collaborative
between the Centre for Transport Studies at UCL and the Intelligent Computer
Systems Centre at the University of the West of England (UWE), and will draw
on contributions from the Oscar Faber and Bittern consultancies. The
research fellow will be responsible for the development and evaluation of
formulations of signal control for use with the evolutionary algorithms that
will be developed by colleagues at the UWE.

Appointment on the Research 1A scale, with a starting salary in the range
£18,909 to £20,865 (including London Weighting) on the RA1A scale.
