Hi Mirko

I had the same problem and solved it in the following manner:
1) Download only render.zip (2.4 MB, 16/3/2000, contains 3 files) from
ftp://ftp.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/spm99_updates/
2) Unzip render_single_subj.mat, render_smooth_average.mat, render_spm96.mat
with Powerarchiver (freeware, http://www.powerarchiver.com/)
3) Save the files
    render_single_subj.mat         (1484 KB 16/3/2000  10:23)
    render_smooth_average.mat (1484 KB 16/3/2000  10:23)
    render_spm96.mat                ( 512 KB  16/3/2000 10:23)
into directory  your_spm_directory/rend
