Learning that Lasts:
Integrating thinking and skills in Design
led by Allan Davies, Richard
Kimbell, & Soo Miller
Introduction
This workshop explores the relationship between design thinking
and the skills necessary to carry out that thinking. It will be based
on two separate research projects which have investigated the
conceptualisation of design from a learner's point of view. The issue
of transferable skills in the discipline will be explored,
particularly as they relate to concepts of creativity. The role that
students' beliefs about the nature of design and the professional
world play in their approaches to learning will be seen as an
important feature in this workshop. The outcomes will have
implications for both curriculum design and approaches to
teaching.
Aims
This one-day workshop is intended to support teachers in their
thinking about an integrated curriculum that provides students with
abilities that serve them as lifelong learners and as effective
designers in the professional world.
Outcomes
At the end of the workshop you will be able to:
Identify students' approaches to learning in design
Articulate the problematics in
integrating thinking and doing
Construct a design curriculum
that promotes learning that lasts
