Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001) (the UK) online
availability

Further to a previous message about its impending passage, the Special
Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001) received royal ascent on 11 May
2001. The original copy of the text is available at
http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2001.htm as a PDF file. For the
international members of the list, it is noted that additionally that this
is the Great Britain-based UK legislation.

The Act has two main parts. The first Part relates to the special
educational Needs and aims to amend the Education Act (1996). The second
part aims to amend the Part IV (Education) of the Disability Discrimination
Act (1995). This second part covers all levels of education.

For accessibility purposes, the second part of the Act was put at
http://www.student.city.ac.uk/~cx639/senda2.htm as a first version. The
rationale for covering only second part is the fact that it covers the
discrimination against disabled students in further and higher education (as
well as in schools). The further versions would include a thorough check
of the text and brief annotations to the Act in the due course. As a further
task, follow-up materials such as statutory instruments and code of
practices would be included.

The related research papers arising from the research project carried out at
the Rehabilitation Resource Centre, City University since 1998 have been
listed at the research project web site,
http://www.student.city.ac.uk/~cx639/index.htm with the free full text links
to some of these papers which are most relevant to the Act. A work program,
(such as a list of the research papers in preparation and list of future
conference papers to be presented) is also included at the research project
web site.
