However, the size and types of spicules are similar to Hymedesmia aenigma decribed by Lundbeck in 1910. This warrants closer examination. The colour is certainly striking, and unlike that of any other sponge I have seen in the cold temperate NE Pacific. However, as Hartman notes in Light's Manual 1975, the color may also be light orange. Incidentally the size of the acanthostyles in material I have looked at both in Cal and BC are larger (to 310 and 380 microns)than might be surmized from Hartman's note of mean length of 150-190 microns. We have found it in British Columbia in an intertidal cave (Execution Rock) in Barkley Sound and diving off Cadman Island, Kanu Inlet, Queen Charlotte Islands. Jeff Goddard found a yellow form at Cape Arago, Oregon. While the blue color is striking, the yellow or light orange form is likely to escape the notice of a casual observer. I am trying to find articles related with it but seems to be not to much about it (CERO results in EBSCO Host On line). Does anybody know if there is sinonimia for Hymenamphiastra cyanocrypta?.
