May I add another word? I do want to say that perhaps only the incomprehensible poetry of Paul Celan has coped with contemporary barbarism. I must say that in my review of the translations of Celan's work that will appear in the American Book REview I tried to cope -- but of course could not -- with the difficulties of his work. Harriet
