The reference to Pope puzzles me rather ~ surely he was a pentameter man?
I found your discussion of Marvell very illuminating, Nicholas. As to
Swift's "endstopped" lines:
Cadenus felt within him rise
Shame, Disappointment, Guilt, Surprize;
He knew not how to reconcile
Such Language, with her usual Style ~
Of course, he often does endstop lines, even on that page, and I opened the
volume at random, so this just might be an exception, but my recollection is
of tremendously varied colloquial force, in the expression & the rhythm.
