I'm a great admirer of John's stance in trying to lead an ethical life. I
always find myself pondering on leading an unethical one though. As if none
of my decisions were ethical. It's untrue of course. Most actions are
informed. As a kind of genetic determinist, or let's say genetic fatalist, I
don't believe we have much choice at all in the supposed choices we make.
Nurture merely countermands the pool of probability. The only pleasure is
the accident of art. This too largely an illusion of beauties. But I'm all
for humans as machines. A soulless programme reciprocating exercises as we
run down our batteries. Then stop. A little kindness along the way cannot be
so bad. We're all just marking time. In the long term nothing matters as
nothing prevails.
