Interesting point that - I have the impression that non of the jisc-mail
archives show up on search engines, whether private archives or not, whereas
the old mailbase ones did

David, Matthew, Erminia, et al,
I'm still failing to see the concern. Actually when I use a search engine
I'm hoping it turns up lots of material of use, wherever it may come from
on the internet. If one says something derogatory about another poet
(directed at the work, more than the person, one hopes) is that wrong?
Presumably, if called on one's remarks, either from inside or outside
the list, one will either choose to defend what he/she said or to apologize
for saying something unconsidered or rash.
Any person who has ever been on this kind of liistserv knows they're
getting a mixed bag/spectrum of material: from mostly casual
(unedited/ungaurded) remarks, like one might spout in a cafe setting
among friends, to an occasional well-written mini-essay. Why should
one be worried about a slapdash or poorly-thought-thru post being
available to "outer eyes"? If the eyes have a brain behind them,
they'd know from the context of a listserv venue that the material
in its archive wasn't meant to be writ in stone.
Candice,
I'm a newbie when it comes to listserv tech. I can't tell you how the
NewPoetry listserv software works exactly. Though subscribing
is a two step process...there is no human review or intervention
in the process. But instantaneous it's not; you're oorrect.
No posts are reviewed prior to hitting the list either...unless the
listmanager decides to set that option. So, in that way I was
characterizing the list as "not private" per se.
Anyway, I want this to be my last post on the archives subject;
I've expressed my point of view, and with or without easily
available archives, I'm happy to be a part of this space. My
main reason for joining PoetryEtc was the hope I'd learn more
about the poets and poetry outside of the US, esp. from Australia,
New Zealand, etc. And thus to be a small part of a freewheeling
international dialog.
I also from time to time snip announcements posted to this
list and post them on NewPoetry. I hope no one minds.
Finally, my god, I hope no one actually reads posts to listservs
caviling at obvious typos & ungrammatical constructions. If so,
my name is mud.
