As a curator and archivist I am familiar with the gap between the artistic approach and the non-inventive, non-artistic information tool. the problem is that many times a different public is addressed. designing a dynamic interface for an encyclopedic survey of media art in Germany on cd-rom, we were criticized by many for making it too "difficult" to access the information directly. and i think people were right. >Simon Biggs wrote: ----- > I'd attempt to create a new interface to it all that would allow everyone > access to the data via the web...although I would do it in a manner that > was not direct or intuitive but rather a deconstructive approach to the > data and how it is organised. Simon, this is certainly a project I would love to do - but as an artistic project dealing with the topic of accessing information and not as a tool to be used by thousands of people. Of course you can always say that this dualistic opposition is wrong, and theoretically I agree. But in practice, what we need is parallel ways of accessing information that allow different users different approaches. > > I would like to see Museums shift their role a away from the > museumification process towards a proactive role. I agree - you just need to find money for these projects but I see more and more institutions "stream" into that direction. best Rudolf for more infos on the cd-roms and related links see: http://www.media-art-net.org -- Rudolf Frieling Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie /Center for Art and Media Lorenzstr. 19 76135 Karlsruhe Tel. +49-721-8100-1703 / Fax -1709 http://www.zkm.de
