Very little has been done systematically on provision for communities as subdivisions of the main Census categories. I am sure that there have been pockets of research and work in the UK with the Kashmiri/Mirpuri speaking populations - however there is no central archive of such information.

Examples of service provision include the following:

1. Health Linkworkers - the job description usually states Urdu/Mirpuri/Punjabi as requirements in areas where there is a significant South Asian population. There are fundamental underresourcing issues in relation to these type of workers, their role, health impacts that are achieved and although very valuable and a key link with communities - the staff are not usually managed in a robust manner to elicit improvements, training and development opportunities tend to be limited .............

2. There have been various calls for the recognition of the Kashmiri population as a distinct cultural identity - for example language and baseline issues. I am not aware of information translated into the appropriate dialects - adult literacy levels is the biggest constraint here.

You may have to persuade service planners locally to distinguish between the populations and the subdivisions - something that is (a) not easy to explain and comprehend (b) requires specific targeted interventions or programmes. However you must consider that whatever is done locally, regionally is equitable as possible and that any of your actions are not detrimental to the community at large.

Hope that others can assist you also in your quest for this info.

Best wishes,

Abdul.

Hi all

I am trying to put together a health education package on CHD and Diabetes
for my local mirpuri speaking population from Kashmir. I am struggling to
locate any significant resource materials within my locality that have been
developed specifically for this community.
What are the experiences of other people and does anyone know if such a
resource exists.
