Re. Llechwedd Slate Mine At the proper Llechwedd Quarry, only the visitors go underground (Quarry Tours / Llechwedd Slate Caverns). All modern extraction has been on the surface. The adjacent mine, Maenofferen, was working underground during 1994 but within a year or two was officially on 'Care and Maintenance'. I understand it is still in this state, although there are clear vehicle tracks going into an upper adit as well as other signs of recent working. Maenofferen has been owned and operated by the Llechwedd Management since the mid 1970s. I saw the battery locomotive working at Aberllefenni Quarry during Feb. 2000 and saw workers at the mine site during Dec. 2000. Andrew Hurrell
