Andrew, There is a lot of research on the matter. A very interesting approach that I would like to propose, is the work that has been conducted to the Walkerart Center in the US. (http://www.walkerart.org/ace/tye/) It 's a project called "Through your eyes", that adapts to potential users, by trying to see the museum through the eyes of representative types of each user's profile. It is very functional, and more or less based on the principal that the more people you address to the more user types you will have. I hope you find it helpful.
