During the spring term in 2001, all English FE colleges will be receiving just over £7,000 from the Further Education Funding Council (FEFC) in order to support the creation of high quality on-line learning materials. As part of the content creation initiative, Becta, with the support of the JISC Regional Support Centres, will be running a series of workshops focusing on some of the skills that need to be developed. Technical standards, project management, copyright and content evaluation will all be covered, and participants will receive a pack full of useful information and further sources of support and information. A speaker from one of the NLN's suppliers will present the 'professional's' approach to the process of materials development, and specialists will investigate issues such as accessibility and project management. Colleges will be encouraged to work collaboratively, and to this end, a 'First Tuesday' session will be run, whereby those with a similar curriculum interest or skill will be able to make initial contact with a view to sharing resources and expertise. The aim of these workshops is to develop the skills that colleges will need in order to create content, both as part of the NLN and as a part of normal curriculum development. It is hoped, however, that some of the materials produced as part of the NLN initiative will be of a sufficiently high standard that they will be able to sit alongside the commercially supplied content and be included in the central respository. The workshops will be run in FE colleges, with the involvement of college and Regional Support Centre staff. Further details are available from your RSC or from the NLN Materials Development Team at Becta. Dates and locations of these workshops will be made available in the Events section of the NLN Web site as they become fixed, and details of individual workshops, along with an on-line booking form, will also appear on the Web site.
