The Bristol Biomedical Image Archive Learning and Teaching project 
(http://www.brisbio.ac.uk/bblt) is pleased to announce two one-day 
seminars on the use of images for learning and teaching.  This JISC funded
project builds on the successful Bristol Biomedical Image Archive 
(http://www.brisbio.ac.uk), and is hosted by the Institute for Learning 
and Research Technology (http://www.ilrt.bristol.ac.uk), University of 
Bristol, UK.

Using Images in Learning and Teaching:
Two One-Day Workshops

Workshop One:
Image Copyright, Image Management & Using PowerPoint to 
Create Image-based Tutorials:
Date: Thursday 12th July 2001. 10am-4pm.

Workshop Two:
Using Images in Web-based Learning and Teaching Materials 
Created with CALnet.
Date: Wednesday 18th July 2001. 10am-4pm. 
Location: University of Bristol

Introduction:
The Bristol Biomedical Image Archive Learning and Teaching 
project (BB-LT) presents a series of workshops for academics who wish to 
learn more about using digital images to create learning and teaching 
materials. Although the images and examples will have a biomedical focus, 
the knowledge and skills gained will be applicable across disciplines.

Workshop One:
Image Copyright, Image Management & Using PowerPoint to Create Image-based
Tutorials:
Date: Thursday 12th July 2001. 10am-4pm. 
Location: University of Bristol.
Fee:  £60.

This workshop will look at several key issues involved in using images in 
learning and teaching and focus on the use of images within Computer 
Assisted Learning (CAL) tutorials created with PowerPoint.

Tutors: Vince Jones, Technical Advisory Service for Images (TASI); 
Emeritus Professor John Bradfield (previously Professor of Histopathology,
University of Bristol); Skip Cox, BB-LT.

Topics: Copyright; Finding images; Formats; Basic image manipulation; 
Basic image management; Incorporating images into PowerPoint tutorials. 
The day will include practical exercises, hints and tips.

Objective: To enable the delegate to enhance his/her skills in creating 
image-based learning and teaching resources through hands-on use of 
materials created for BB-LT under the supervision of resource creators and
image experts.

Who should attend: Members of the UK HE biomedical community who wish to 
incorporate images into their learning and teaching resources.

Prerequisites: Delegates should be registered with the Bristol BioMed 
Image Archive before the day. BioMed registration is free for the UK HE 
community through http://www.brisbio.ac.uk/. Delegates will also benefit 
more from this workshop if they have some experience of creating 
PowerPoint presentations and have viewed the PowerPoint Tutorial 
"Understanding the Glomerulus" found at 
http://www.brisbio.ac.uk/bblt/res.html.

Fees: £60 per workshop including lunch and tea/coffee.

Workshop 2

Using Images in Web-based Learning and Teaching Materials Created with 
CALnet

Wednesday 18th July 2001. 10am-4pm. University of Bristol. £60

This workshop will look at some simple techniques for using the Web 
authoring programme CALnet to create Web-based teaching materials with 
digital images. Although the images and examples will have a biomedical 
focus, the knowledge and skills gained will be applicable across 
disciplines.

Tutors: Julian Cook, University of Bristol Learning Technology Support 
Service  (LTSS); Anthony Telford, Dental School, University of Bristol; 
Skip Cox, BB-LT.

Topics: An introduction to choosing images; basic CALnet page 
construction; incorporating image resources into basic Web pages; 
self-assessment quizzes. The day will include practical exercises, hints 
and tips.

Objective: To enable the delegate to enhance his/her skills in creating 
image-based learning and teaching resources through hands-on use of 
materials created for BB-LT under the supervision of resource creators and
image experts.

Who should attend: Members of the UK HE biomedical community who wish to 
incorporate images into their learning and teaching resources using CALnet

Prerequisites: Experience with a Web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, 
Netscape); Familiarity with Windows Explorer; Bristol BioMed Image Archive
registration, free for the UK HE community through 
http://www.brisbio.ac.uk/.

Fees: £60 per workshop including lunch and tea/coffee.
