Managing Agent and Advisory Service for Moving Pictures and Sound in UK
HE/FE

A full-time post for MAAS Media Online at the British Universities Film &
Video Council
Appointment of one full-time Assistant (on a renewable annual contract
expected to run for three years and possibly five) Salary ­ BFI equivalent
Scale 7 circa £19,000 p.a.

The British Universities Film & Video Council, in partnership with the Open
University, has recently been appointed to run the Managing Agent and
Advisory Service for Moving Pictures and Sound. The Advisory Service will
provide information on the tools, technologies, architecture and pedagogical
issues resulting from this new form of delivery. The work of the Managing
Agent involves the selection, negotiation and clearance of rights in moving
picture and sound content for encoding and release online to institutions of
further and higher education in the UK.   These are regarded as two
Œservices¹ which are combined in their activities at the BUFVC and supported
by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).

The BUFVC is now seeking a full-time Assistant to help manage the work of
the advisory service which will operate under a Œservice level agreement¹
with the JISC.  The Assistant will be based in offices in central London.
The Assistant will work closely with his or her opposite number in the
Managing Agent and will be charged with covering for and supporting the work
of the other in the case of absence or increased workloads.

These are contract appointments with annual confirmation of continuation for
three years with the expectation that the work will continue for five years
and beyond.

Assistant to the Head of the Advisory Service

Working to the Head of the Advisory Service, based at the BUFVC¹s offices in
central London, the Assistant will have the following tasks:
- to assist in preparing written reports on the activities of the Advisory
Service to be presented to both the Executive Committee of the BUFVC and the
Steering Group/Moving Pictures and Sound Working Group of the JISC Committee
on Electronic Information
- to work closely with the Managing Agent for Moving Pictures and Sound and
to Œshadow¹ the work of the Managing Agent¹s full-time Assistant
- to assist in delivering advice online, via phone, fax and through
face-to-face meetings with the user and academic support services community
in UK higher and further education
- assist in the process of assessing, promoting and advising on good
practices and technical standards for differing needs across the higher and
further education communities (i.e. for use in teaching, learning and
research in all disciplines) in dealing with moving pictures and sound.

Such advice may include information relating to tools, technology,
standards, metadata, cataloguing, intellectual property rights, licensing,
digital preservation, retention and use of content
- assist in disseminating information about best practice via, a website,
workshops, publications and conference presentations
- assist in providing general advice on copyright and other IPR issues
related to the provision of electronic moving pictures and sound (in
association with the Managing Agent responsible for acquiring moving picture
and sound content for the DNER)

Further Details for Applicants

The full-time Assistant to the Head of the Advisory Service should have the
following qualifications and experience:
- good academic qualifications preferably to degree level.
- an active interest in, and knowledge of, modes of delivery for time-based
media online
- knowledge of UK higher and/or further education
- capable of working with limited supervision to an established timetable,
and of maintaining the project administration system
