BASIC ARCHIVE SKILLS TRAINING DAY

Venue: The Imperial Hotel, Russell Square, London WC1B 5BB

Our well-known Introductory Course is aimed at people working with archives and records without formal recordkeeping qualifications, and who feel that they would benefit from some basic training in the principles of managing records and archives. It is suitable for:

  • Archives and records assistants
  • Managers of archive staff
  • Librarians and information managers responsible for archives and records
  • IT professionals seeking an overview of the aims of archives and records management
  • Anyone else with responsibility for managing archives and records

The training day has been reviewed and revised to reflect feedback from participants and the course director’s evaluations. The day retains the five core sessions focusing on the main areas of archives and records management, differing in length as appropriate. By chairing and facilitating throughout the day, the course directors will ensure that the program is integrated and flows well. Sessions will include ample time for questions and a high level of participation is encouraged.

Participants are encouraged to prepare for the course by formulating questions or issues that have arisen in the course of their work, for consideration by the speakers and the class as a whole.

The course fee of £95 also includes lunch (with vegetarian option, please let the directors know if you have any other special dietary needs) and tea and coffee.

10.00-11.00: Preservation: Strategies and Guidelines (Jonathan Rhys-Lewis, Freelance Preservation Consultant)

11.00-11.15: Coffee

11.15-12.45: Archival Processing, Arrangement and Description: overview followed by practical exercise (Speaker to be confirmed)

12.45-1.00: Discussion

1-2pm: Lunch

2-2.30: Provision of Access to Archives (Janet Foster and Margaret Crockett )

2.30-3.15: Records Management Overview (Janet Foster)

3.15-3.30: Tea

3.30-4.15: IT and Recordkeeping: Possibilities and Opportunities (Margaret Crockett)

4.15-4.30: Info-byte ~ Networking Archives
