a)Faculty of 1000
-----------------
CHEST is pleased to announce that, following discussions with BioMed
Central, an offer is in place for 'Faculty of 1000'. A brief description
provided by Biomed Central states:

"Faculty of 1000 is a revolutionary online literature awareness tool
which comprehensively and systematically highlights and reviews the most
interesting papers published in the biological sciences. It is based on
the recommendation of well over 1000 leading researchers. Faculty of
1000 will be run by scientists for scientists, and will provide a
rapidly updated consensus map of the most important papers and trends
across biology."

A free trial to the end of December 2001 is now available from
http://www.facultyof1000.com/about/institution/trial

The offer for subscription to 'Faculty of 1000' is available to UK
Higher Education and Research Institutions, UK Further Education, and
IATUL (International Association of Technological University
Libraries).
It is available on an annual basis but greater savings can be made if
sites sign for 3 or 5 years 'up-front'. On a 5 year 'up-front'
subscription the normal discount through CHEST is 20% (5 years for the
price of 4) but for sites subscribing before 31st December this discount
is increased to 25%. There is a 20% discount on BioMed Central's normal
pricing (i.e. pricing before the CHEST Discounted offer) for annaul or 3
year 'up-front' subscriptions taken before 31st December.

Pricing is based on size banding according to selected departmental
sizes (HESA statistics) - a list of HE institutions and their banding is
available on the CHEST Web pages at
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/facultyof1000/

CHEST discounted pricing ranges from £970 p.a. for a very small
institution (£2,500 for 3 years 'up-front'; £4000 for 5 years 'up-front'
- or £3,750 for subscription taken before 31st December) to £3,880 p.a.
for a large institution (£10,000 for 3 years 'up-front'; £16,000 for 5
years 'up-front' - or £15,000 for subscription taken before 31st
December).

Full pricing details may also be found on the CHEST Web pages at

b)Blackboard update

product architecture will be changing from next week.

There will be no change in price for Institutions already licensed under
the CHEST offer - Blackboard has agreed to honour these licences.

However, new pricing will come into effect for institutions subscribing
from next week. CHEST has not received the full details but will update
the website (http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/blackboard) as soon as
these have been received.

Blackboard has sent the following message to CHEST:

"Blackboard announces e-Education suite: Dear Reader, as you know the

In light of their recent announcement this offer will be changed to also
