Introducing MIMAS Bibliographic Services

There will be a FREE course introducing the MIMAS Bibliographic
Services on Wed 21 November 2001 from 10.30am to 4.00pm. The course
will be held at Manchester Computing, University of Manchester, Oxford
Road.

This is an overview course providing an introduction to the MIMAS
bibliographic services, with a demonstration of their main features,
followed by a hands-on session. The demonstrations will not only
illustrate how to use the services, but also discuss the underlying
search mechanisms and consider future developments.

During the day the following services will be covered:

- Archives Hub. A NEW service providing a FREE gateway to archive
collections held in UK universities and colleges, forming part of the
  National Archives Network.
    http://www.archiveshub.ac.uk/
- COPAC gives FREE access to the merged catalogues 20 of the largest
university research libraries in the UK and Ireland.
    http://copac.ac.uk
- ISI Web of Science Service for UK Education gives access to the
Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts &
Humanities Citation Index, ISI Proceedings, and related services.

    http://wos.mimas.ac.uk/
- JSTOR is a unique digital archive collection, giving access to the
full-text of non-current issues of over 100 core scholarly journals in
a variety of disciplines. Coverage starts from the first issue of each
journal. Available to members of subscribing institutions.
    http://www.mimas.ac.uk/jstor/
- zetoc gives access to the British Library's Electronic Table of
Contents (ETOC) and alerting service. FREE to members of most UK
  further and higher education institutions.

This course gives the opportunity to get to grips with each service in
an unhurried situation, with service support staff available to answer
questions and provide assistance. It will be of interest to
researchers, academics, librarians and support staff within the
Further Education and Higher Education communities. Some experience of
using a web browser will be useful for the practical exercises.

Lunch is not provided on this course, but there are places to eat
nearby.
