London Board, 1968

  A-E = pass
  F-H = fail

There might also have been an 'O' - or was that only a consolation prize
at A-level?

Some time after that they changed, at least twice. Can't remember which
order they did things, but at one time it was numeric grades (can't
remember the range or meanings for certain, but I _think_ 1-5 was
equivalent to A-E, etc)

and at another time (later, I think) it was
  A,C,E = pass (no B or D !!)
F, ?? = fail (or had they dropped the concept of failure by then?)

Then CSEs came along, by which time I was too old to care.
