Comments on the following would be welcome

Learning contracts in Work based learning.

In work based learning the student does not follow a standard programme but
negotiates a learning contract with the lecturer based on
innovative/developmental work being undertaken in the workplace. The student
submits a wide range of documents as proof of work done. As well as work
completed by the student the student submits a wide range of material the
copyright of which is usually owned by others. This includes documentation
owned by employers and documentation from parallel organisations with whom
the student may have contact. Letters, memos either produced as company
activity or privately are also included. (Glasgow Caledonian University does
not claim copyright in students' work which is irrelevant anyway as the
copyright belong to others.)
Advice given to us is that the student reproducing the work is OK as long as
it is as part of their assessment. The copyrights will belong to the
original creators/employers so we should be careful that the work is not
used for anything other than assessment purposes. It must not be further
copied and definitely not published without permission.
Advice also received on the need to keep documentation for QAA audit
purposes suggests that a sample of current students' portfolios of evidence
should be photocopied and retained by the University. Again we are
suggesting that the proposed form highlights this and students sign to
indicate their agreement. However if others have similar workbased
programmes there may be alternative solutions and any guidance would be
welcome.
We are think of drafting a form for students to sign clarifying that they
are submitting copyright material with permission from its owners. Has
anyone any experience of doing this.
