CGGR-L

There has been considerable recent interest in computerised historical
place-name gazetteers, which are not exactly GIS systems but are arguably
an essential component of any general purpose historical GIS, enabling it
to be used in association with a range of attribute information.

Linda Hill, of the University of California, Santa Barbara, has established
a new discussion list to support collaboration among those who are
developing digital gazetteers - the list is especially focused on
geospatially-referenced gazetteers and associated gazetteer services.

CGGR stands for the Center for Global Georeferencing Research at the
University of California, Santa Barbara. Discussion issues include
gazetteer content standards, typing (category) schemes, gazetteer service
protocols, spatial accuracy, gazetteer implementation, and research.
Related issues of global geographic referencing are welcome.
