Subject: Sailing and Field Work in the Caribbean
Hello all!
In May 2001, Seascape Research and Education will
be offering the opportunity for students who are interested in GIS, Conservation
and Marine protection issues to take part in a very practical experience during
a sail among the Grenadine Islands of the West Indies.
The aim of this project is to assist in the field
collection of data necessary for the current development of a GIS Metadatabase
for the country, and for the establishment of a coastal marine monitoring system
in the Grenadines. Participants will be based on a sailing vessel, and
will sail among the Grenadine islands. Each stop will include hiking and
snorkelling activities to assist in ground truthing and the taking of Ground
Control Points. Participants will also assist in assesments of coral reef
and seagrass areas.
This is an opportunity for all who are interested
in getting a field perspective of conservation issues, and who may be interested
in gaining some sailing and in-water experience. Participants will also
gain a sense of the issues from a local perspective. The results of the
project will contribute greately to local environmental
management and protection efforts.
Please feel free to respond with any questions
you may have.
All the best,
Kurt
