Opportunity at: DEPARTMENT OF GEOMATIC ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON EPSRC FUNDED PHD OPPORTUNITY IN SATELLITE GEODESY AND ASTRODYNAMICS An opportunity has arisen for a PhD student to participate in a new international collaborative research project under the direction of Professor Paul Cross that will lead to exciting employment possibilities in the rapidly developing field of global navigation and space geodesy. IMPROVING FORCE MODELS FOR THE REAL-TIME PREDICTION OF GNSS SATELLITE POSITIONS The student will work as part of a team to develop modelling techniques for the non-conservative forces acting on GNSS spacecraft in medium Earth orbit arising from anisotropic thermal radiation, as well as from solar radiation pressure and albedo effects. The specific role of the student will be to work on modelling of heat transport mechanisms for the spacecraft in the course of its orbital trajectory. This will involve radiative transfer theory, finite element/finite difference methods, space environment simulation and orbit modelling. The project involves collaboration with NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, California) and the UK NERC Space Geodesy group. There will be the opportunity to visit, and work at, JPL each year over the period of study, as well as working with and visiting the NERC group at both Monks Wood, near Huntingdon and Herstmonceux in Sussex. There will also be opportunities to attend and present papers at major international conferences. Following the EU decision to develop a European GNSS (Galileo) such technology has become an important growth area in global infrastructure, and this PhD studentship is an excellent opportunity to develop highly marketable skills in the subject.
