Author: P.J. Clarke Subject: Two PhD studentships available [Apologies to those of you who receive this as members of more than one related list. Please draw this announcement to the attention of any interested students or colleagues.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE DEPARTMENT OF GEOMATICS NERC PhD STUDENTSHIPS SATELLITE GEODESY & GEODYNAMICS and ENVIRONMENTAL REMOTE SENSING Applications are invited for two NERC-funded studentships leading to the degree of PhD in Geomatics at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Candidates should possess, or be about to obtain, the equivalent of a UK first-class or upper second-class degree in a relevant numerate discipline (e.g. geomatics/surveying, mathematics, physics, Earth/environmental science, oceanography, physical geography). One studentship may be held within any area of the overlap between NERC and departmental research remits (broadly speaking: geodesy; gravimetry; tectonic, coastal, glacial and hydrological deformation monitoring; oceanography; environmental remote sensing for vegetation monitoring and change detection). A fuller description of departmental research interests, including a list of suggested projects, is available on the department's WWW pages at http://geomatics.ncl.ac.uk/ . The second studentship must be held within the field of hydrology and satellite gravimetric geodesy. For more details about this project, see http://geomatics.ncl.ac.uk/research/projects/grace/gracephd.htm . The studentships will carry a stipend at standard NERC rates (min £7,500 pa plus university fees), and opportunities exist for paid demonstrating work. The studentships are restricted by NERC's eligibility rules (see the FAQ at http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/students): generally speaking this includes UK residents and citizens, although other EC residents may be eligible for a fees-only award. Informal enquiries about the studentships should be made to Dr Peter Clarke, Department of Geomatics, University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU, tel: 0191 222 6351, email: [log in to unmask] Application should be made on the standard University form (available online at http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/ or in hardcopy on request to [log in to unmask]). The provisional closing date is 1 June 2001, although exceptional applications received after this date may be considered for these or other studentships. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Dr Peter CLARKE, Department of Geomatics, University of Newcastle, NE1 7RU, UK Tel: +44 (0)191 222 6445 (dept) or 6351 (direct); Fax: +44 (0)191 222 8691 http://geomatics.ncl.ac.uk/ and http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/peter.clarke/
