Ph.D. Position (April 17, 2001) The Institute for Mineralogy, Petrology and Crystallography of the University of Marburg is seeking to fill a research position (Ph.D position) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (BAT II/2). The project addresses fundamental questions of the kinetics of oxidation and crystallization which are of relevance for materials sciences and petrology. In petrology, we are concerned about processes of basalt genesis occurring during the emplacement of lava flows; this includes processes of metamorphism such as the interaction between flows. Recent observations suggest a relation between diffusion, crystallization and oxidation (J. Petrol. 42, 507-527, 2001). The intention of this project is to further examine and quantify this relationship, particularly with respect to the environmental atmosphere, using basalt glass from Kilauea, Hawaii. The project is based on some simple experiments in controlled atmosphere. Analytical methods may include, for example, electron microprobe analyses, and elemental distribution analysis, Mössbauer spectroscopy, XANES, differential scanning calorimetry and the application of the crystal size distribution theory. The work is anticipated as a cooperation with other Institutes in Germany. The position is initially for 14 months but should be extended to a maximum of three years.
