we would like to bring to your attention the following announcement.
Short course on: "texture analysis and thermodynamic modelling of
metamorphic rocks", organised by the Société Francaise de Mineralogie
et cristallographie and Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia,
in Pavia, September 15-21, 2001.
The core subject of the school will be on equilibrium thermodynamic
modelling techniques taught by Roger Powell (University of Melbourne).
The course also intends to show other approaches to texture
interpretation: mass balance using image analysis, geospeedometry and
kinetics. These quantitative methods will be presented by means of
theoretical lectures and practical examples from current research (in
English). A provisionary schedule of the course is as follows:
1) Methods
R. Powell - equilibrium thermodynamics;

THERMOCALC - R. Powell;
TWQ-Theriac, Perplex...;
image analysis software (multispec) - G. Godard;
3) Examples of textural analysis from microscope to thermodynamic
modelling M. Ballèvre, B. Cesare, G. Godard, B. Goffé, M. Guiraud,
J.R. Kiénast, J.M. Lardeaux, R. Powell, G. Rebay, O. Vidal....
Participants are encouraged to present and discuss their own examples,
for which ample time will be available. Participants might bring their
own computers and documantation. Facilities will be available in Pavia
(microscopes, projections facilities with Power Point and PCs).
Cost is estimated to be:
520 Euros - senior participants
360 Euros - students
This includes inscription to the course, CD-rom with programs, manuals
and lectures' slides, 6 night accomodation in University colleges,
lunch and coffe breaks.
