(For further details concerning this email, please contact the person posting it directly: [log in to unmask]) I have recently (2000) completed an MA in Refugee Studies at the University of East London (UEL). One of my interests was the Kurdish community and my dissertation examined the notions of "home" and "return" among the Kurds in London and Paris. I am currently writing a book ("Shelter from the Storm? -- Seeking Asylum in Britain") with Latif Ismail, a former student at UEL who did the Third World Studies BA course with me a few years ago and who now works for a refugee agency. On 20 May, we spoke at a meeting of social work students from the University of South Carolina, who were on a study trip to the UK. All information would be welcome, particularly relating to the experience of seeking asylum in the UK from the perspective of asylum seekers themselves, as well as on the current need for immigration in Europe; on the current state and direction of social policy in Europe as it affects refugees; on the law; and on the role of foreign policy in increasing or decreasing forced migration flows. Please let me know of any opportunities you may know of to speak to meetings and groups about what it means to be an asylum seeker in Britain.
