A problem with Neil's suggestion r/e standard symbols, line colours,
thickness etc.

If you import a shape file into ArcView, it assigns the colours, shapes,
sizes, shading, etc. automatically and, unless you have an associated legend
file, the resulting product is never what was originally assigned, standard
or not. It will normally condense a multi-coloured/typed coverage into a
single colour and line type.

Solutions

1) insist on a legend file (.avl for anyone who cares) with each shape file

2) if the data attributes are set properly and use a standard terminology
then the system can be instructed to use a set of standards for colour,
shape, symbol, size, line type etc. which doesn't need to be copied across
every time.
