By incorporating also the corresponding displacement vector, foundation displacements as well as load capacity can be addressed. The lecture explores such an approach in relation to shallow, rigid foundations on sand. Relevant dimensionless quantities are established and the concepts of interaction diagrams in load space are introduced. These are readily extended to a rigorous work-hardening plasticity model of the problem. The theoretical model is supported by high quality experimental data, including tests specifically designed to explore the shape of the yield surface for the footings. The resulting approach has much in common with Critical State Soil Mechanics, and these analogies will be explored. The ideas are relevant to all areas where foundations are subjected to lateral and moment loading, for instance retaining structures, offshore platforms and in earthquake engineering. There is no charge to attend and all are welcome. Tea and Biscuits are served from 5.00 pm.
